Data Entry Typing Test: KDPH Rules, Speeds and Practice

A government data entry typing test measures how many keys you press correctly in a fixed time, not words per minute. This page sets out the data entry tests in the SSC 2026 notices, what 8,000 and 15,000 KDPH mean in WPM, how the error limits work, and how to practise for them.

Short answer: SSC CHSL Data Entry Operators need 8,000 key depressions per hour (or 15,000 for DEO posts in the Part A ministries) in a 15-minute test. The SSC CGL Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) is a passage of about 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes. All three are qualifying: you have to clear them, but the marks don't add to your rank.

What KDPH and KPH mean

KDPH stands for key depressions per hour. KPH usually means keystrokes per hour. Both count how many keys you press in an hour, so a 15-minute test is scaled up by four: 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes is 8,000 KDPH.

To compare with a typing test, the usual convention treats one word as five key depressions. That gives KDPH = WPM × 300 and WPM = KDPH ÷ 300. The KDPH calculator does the arithmetic for your own numbers.

The conversion doesn't tell you how an exam counts corrections, spaces, Shift or mistakes. This site's browser tests count from the text you type, while the Windows app counts physical key presses including Shift and Alt-code sequences, so the two can differ on the same passage.

How to pass a data entry test

Speed alone doesn't clear the test. SSC checks the typed text against the passage, and in CGL the notice caps errors at 20% for UR candidates, 25% for OBC and EWS, and 30% for other categories. Tax Assistant and the Computer Proficiency posts listed in the notice face a higher cut-off that the Commission sets separately. The CHSL notice doesn't give a percentage error limit for DEO posts; SSC evaluates the test under guidelines published on its website.

• Know which target is yours. A DEO post in a Part A ministry needs nearly twice the speed of other DEO posts: 15,000 against 8,000 key depressions per hour.
• Aim above the line. 8,000 KDPH is about 27 WPM. If you type 30 to 32 WPM with few errors in practice, nerves and an unfamiliar keyboard on the day have some room.
• Don't count on an exemption. The CHSL notice gives DEO candidates no exemption from the skill test. In CGL, PwBD-OH candidates can be exempted from DEST with a Civil Surgeon certificate, except for the Computer Proficiency and higher-DEST posts (Tax Assistant in CBDT is the one exception).
• Scribe-eligible candidates get extra time. Both notices give 5 more minutes, so the DEO skill test runs 20 minutes for them.

Government data entry test or a data entry job test?

People searching for a data entry test are often looking for two different things. SSC's DEO and DEST tests are passage copying: you read printed English matter and type it into a plain text box. Private data entry job tests more often use forms, invoice numbers or spreadsheet cells, and score keystrokes per hour on numbers as well as letters. How to practise for a data entry typing test

1. Take one full 15-minute attempt on the CGL DEST practice test and write down your key depressions and errors.
2. Convert the result with the KDPH calculator and compare it with 8,000 or 15,000.
3. Look at where the errors fall. If numbers, capitals or punctuation keep going wrong, drill sentences full of those characters before the next full attempt.
4. Build stamina with the 10-minute typing test on days you can't fit in a full 15 minutes.
