What the Punjabi typing test measures

The Punjabi typing test reports three things. Your speed in words per minute, counted the way government exams count it. Your accuracy across the whole passage rather than at the moment you finish. And a marked copy of what you typed, so you can see which Gurmukhi words did not match and why.

It runs on the PSSSB Clerk settings: a 10-minute timer with a 30 words per minute target. You can stop earlier and the score is worked out over the time you actually typed.

Raavi is a font, InScript is the keyboard

This is the single most common confusion in Punjabi typing, and it costs people weeks of practice on the wrong keys.

Raavi is a Unicode Gurmukhi font that ships with Windows. It decides how Punjabi letters look on screen. Gurmukhi InScript is a keyboard layout. It decides which key produces which letter. A notice that names Raavi has told you the font and told you nothing about the key positions.

This Punjabi typing test uses Gurmukhi InScript, the standard Indian government layout, and produces ordinary Unicode text that displays in Raavi wherever Raavi is installed. If your own notice names a different arrangement, check it before you build up speed, because relearning key positions later is expensive.

If you learned on AnmolLipi or Asees, be aware those are legacy non-Unicode fonts. Text typed in them is not Unicode Gurmukhi, and the key positions differ, so practice on them does not transfer cleanly to a Unicode exam.

Which Punjab exams need Punjabi typing

The best documented is PSSSB. Advertisement No. 02 of 2026, for the Clerk recruitment, requires a typing test on computer in both English and Punjabi at 30 words per minute, with the Punjabi test taken in Unicode Compliant Font Raavi. That test is qualifying: you have to pass it, and merit comes from the written examination. Full rules and a timed practice test are on the PSSSB typing test page.

Other Punjab employers set their own standards and publish them in their own notices. Where this site has not read a primary notice for an exam, it says so on that exam's page rather than repeating a figure from elsewhere.

How long should a Punjabi typing practice run be

Short runs flatter you. Accuracy in Punjabi typically falls in the last few minutes, as matras start getting dropped, and a 2-minute test never reaches that point. Use the full 10 minutes when you want a number you can trust, and short runs only for drilling a specific problem.

A useful check: compare the mistakes in your first few lines against your last few. If the end is clearly worse, the problem is stamina rather than key knowledge, and more short runs will not fix it.

What the Punjabi passages are

The bank holds 100 Punjabi passages written in the register government office work actually uses: notices, registers, verification notes and correspondence. That matters because exam passages are not conversational Punjabi, and the vocabulary you meet in a news article is not the vocabulary you meet in the test.

Where Punjabi typing mistakes come from

Most lost marks in Punjabi typing are not unknown keys. They are matras and the addak: a vowel sign dropped or attached to the wrong consonant produces a real Gurmukhi word, just a different one, so it reads fine while you type and is only caught by the marker.

Practise those deliberately. Type a sentence you already know, then read the marked result rather than the speed. When the same matra keeps appearing in the mistake list, drill that one combination before taking another full test.

Which font does this Punjabi typing test use?

Unicode Gurmukhi, which is what the Raavi font displays. Raavi is a font, not a keyboard layout: it decides how the letters look on screen, not which key produces which letter. Anything you type here is ordinary Unicode Punjabi and will show in Raavi on a machine that has it.

Do I need to install anything to type Punjabi here?

No. The Punjabi typing test runs in your browser and maps your keys to Gurmukhi as you type, so you do not need to install a Punjabi keyboard or a separate typing program. You do need a physical keyboard: an on-screen phone keyboard cannot produce the InScript layout.

Reviewed 16 September 2026. The PSSSB speeds and the Raavi font requirement come from PSSSB Advertisement No. 02 of 2026, page 6, paragraph 7 items iv to vi. That advertisement names no keyboard layout, but the Board’s own typing-test instruction sheets for its 2021, 2022 and 2023 Clerk recruitments do: Punjabi is to be typed in Unicode Raavi using the INSCRIPT keyboard, which is the arrangement used here.
