The scoring mechanics come from a Board circular corroborated by several independent sources; the Board re-uploads its pattern each cycle, so check the current official notification before relying on any requirement.
How your score is calculated
Every 5 characters you type (including spaces) count as one standard word. Your gross speed is total characters divided by 5, divided by the minutes elapsed. Accuracy is net characters divided by gross characters, expressed as a percentage. Your result screen shows each detected mistake and the practice formula applied to your attempt. This result is not an official exam result.
Worked example: the test requires 30 WPM sustained for 10 minutes — that works out to roughly 300 standard words (1,500 characters) across the full attempt. If you type 1,500 characters with 110 characters' worth of errors, your accuracy is (1,500 − 110) ÷ 1,500 ≈ 92.7% — a qualifying result, since PSSSB's threshold is 92% (a maximum of 8% mistakes). Fall below that and the attempt does not qualify, even if your raw speed clears 30 WPM.

Tips for the PSSSB Clerk typing test
Both languages share the same 30 WPM / 92% accuracy bar — there's no easier language to lean on, so practise both to the same standard.
- Use the editing keys deliberately. Backspace and the chunk-navigation keys work but don't add to your gross speed — use them to fix real mistakes, not as a crutch, since every second spent editing is a second not typing new text.
- Complete every chunk. The official test delivers text in 10 chunks of roughly 32-34 words; you must work through all of them to be eligible to pass, so don't sprint through the first few and stall on the rest.
- Learn the Gurmukhi INSCRIPT map early if Punjabi is new to you. It's phonetically aligned with the Hindi Devanagari INSCRIPT layout on the same physical keys, so if you already know Hindi InScript, the finger positions will feel familiar even though the script is different.
- Practise the full 10 minutes, not short bursts. A fast first two minutes that fades afterward is a common way to clear the WPM average on paper while missing the 92% accuracy bar in practice.
