How the score works
Counted mistakes are taken off your total, and your speed comes from the words that are left. A full mistake counts as one and a half mistake counts as half. After the test you can see which mistakes counted and what each one took off. The score cannot fall below zero.

The 2026 notice, section 15.1 on page 20, gives these ordinary timings and separate scribe accommodations. The app uses a ten-minute typing drill; its error caps are practice settings.
Typing tips
Keep typing when you slip. Correction keys behave the way the table above describes, so stopping to fight one word costs you more than the word is worth. Check the result screen afterwards to see what actually went wrong.
- Read the official grade/language timing in the source note. Do this before planning a full transcription attempt.
- The 5% and 7% error options are practice thresholds. Do not treat them as newly verified official cutoffs.
How to practise for the SSC Stenographer skill test
The preset here offers passage typing. It does not play dictation and it cannot assess your shorthand notes, so treat it as one part of a longer task.
After a dictation exercise, mark the places where you could not read your own notes, and separately mark the words you understood but mistyped. The first problem belongs to shorthand recognition. The second is the one you can practise at the keyboard.
For that keyboard work, type a short section containing the troublesome words, then go back to transcribing from your notes with the punctuation and sentence boundaries in view. Copying clean printed text removes the need to interpret shorthand, so its speed is not your transcription speed.
The cited SSC notice describes ten-minute dictation at 100 WPM for Grade C or 80 WPM for Grade D, followed by transcription taking between forty and sixty-five minutes depending on grade and language. Record dictation and transcription time separately. The app's ten-minute drill, its 40/35 WPM pace targets and its 5% and 7% error options are practice settings, not official transcription requirements.

SSC Stenographer skill test questions
What typing speed does an SSC stenographer need?
The 2026 SSC Stenographer notice doesn't set a separate typing speed. It sets the dictation speed: 100 WPM for Grade C and 80 WPM for Grade D, for ten minutes. You then type out your notes on a computer in 40 minutes (English) or 55 minutes (Hindi) for Grade C, and 50 or 65 minutes for Grade D. The 40 WPM English and 35 WPM Hindi targets on this page are practice figures.
What happens in the SSC shorthand skill test?
A passage is dictated for ten minutes and you take it down in shorthand. Then you transcribe your notes on a computer within the time set for your grade and language. This page drills the typing half. It can't check your shorthand notes.
What targets does this practice test use?
The typing-drill targets are 40 WPM in English QWERTY and 35 WPM in Hindi. The Hindi layouts are Mangal InScript, Mangal Remington, Kruti Dev 010. These are keyboard-practice figures used by the app. They are separate from the dictation speed in the source note.
How do correction keys work here?
Backspace only reaches into the current word. Delete and navigation are switched off. This is a transcription-drill rule used by the app. It says nothing about how the real shorthand test is invigilated.
