Quick answer: Almost any site can show you a passage and count words per minute. That is a typing box, not an exam simulation. A government typing skill test is not a speed contest. It is a constrained task: a fixed duration, a fixed minimum word count, a specific keyboard layout, a specific set of keys you are not allowed to press, and an error formula that decides whether you pass. Change any one of those and you are measuring something else.
The dangerous part is that generic practice does not feel wrong. You will score well, feel prepared, and then meet a locked backspace key on exam day for the first time. What follows is how to catch that in advance.
The seven checks
1. Is the backspace key locked?
Many skill tests disable backspace entirely. A typo becomes part of your evaluated text and you type on. If your practice lets you delete freely, you are rehearsing a correction habit the exam will take away — and the habit costs you more time than the original mistake would have.
How to test it: start a test, type a wrong letter, press backspace. If the letter disappears, the simulation is not enforcing the rule.2. Are the other navigation keys blocked?
Backspace gets the attention, but arrow keys, Home, End and Tab are usually restricted too. Being able to click back into an earlier line and repair it quietly invalidates the whole attempt.
Home. If your cursor moves, editing is possible and the result is not comparable to an exam score.
3. Does it use your exam's threshold, not a generic one?
Minimum speed and minimum word count are set per post and per language. A site showing one universal target has not modelled your exam. For example, one railway clerk-typist practice profile expects 30 WPM and 300 words in English but 25 WPM and 250 words in Hindi, over a 10-minute test — three numbers that all change if you switch post or language.
How to test it: switch the language selector. If the pass threshold does not change with it, it is decorative.4. Does it score the way your exam scores?
Net WPM is not one formula. A railway-style profile applies an error allowance of 5% of evaluated words, then deducts 10 words for every error beyond it, and counts a run of consecutive omitted or repeated words once rather than word by word. Score that same attempt with a plain "words minus mistakes" rule and you get a materially different number.
How to test it: look for the deduction rule in writing. If the site never states how errors convert into a score, its result is not checkable.5. Does it link the official notice the rules came from?
This is the check that separates researched content from copied content. Rules change between recruitment cycles. A site that cites the actual notification or instruction PDF can be audited and corrected; a site that just asserts numbers cannot, and you have no way to know how old they are.
How to test it: look for a source link on the exam page. Then open it and confirm it is the recruiting body's own document.6. Hindi only: does it type matras in the correct order?
This is the most common silent failure in Hindi typing practice, and most candidates never spot it. Legacy layouts — Kruti Dev, DevLys and Remington — are typed in visual order, not spoken order. The vowel sign ि is typed before its consonant, and the half-र form is typed after its cluster. A tool that ignores this will accept a keystroke sequence no real candidate could ever produce, and reject the correct one.
How to test it: type a word containing ि, such as किताब, using the exam's real key sequence. If the tool wants the vowel sign after the consonant, its Hindi engine is wrong.7. Does it offer the exact layout your post uses?
"Hindi typing" is not one thing. Mangal InScript, Mangal Remington and Kruti Dev 010 have different key positions and different rules, and your notice names one of them. Practising the wrong layout builds muscle memory you then have to unlearn.

Is backspace allowed in a government typing test?
In many skill tests it is disabled, so a mistake is carried into the evaluated text. The policy differs between recruiting bodies, so confirm it in your exam's current official notice — and practise with it locked if it is locked.
Why does Hindi typing practice feel wrong on some sites?
Legacy layouts are typed in visual order. ि comes before its consonant and the half-र after its cluster. Tools that ignore that ordering ask for keystrokes a real candidate would never press.
Do all government typing exams use the same passing speed?
No. Thresholds are per post and per language. Check the minimum speed, minimum word count and duration for your specific post.
Does free practice mean lower quality?
