How to read these charts
The Key column is the key as it is printed on a standard US-QWERTY keyboard. Where a capital letter or a symbol is shown, that means the shifted key. The Output column is the Devanagari character that key produces in that layout.
Mappings are grouped by what they produce — vowels, consonants, vowel signs, digits, conjuncts, punctuation — rather than by keyboard position, because you almost always start from "which key gives me ङ" rather than from a key.
You do not need to install anything to practise here. The typing engine maps your keystrokes inside the browser, so these layouts work on any machine without adding a Hindi keyboard to Windows. To type Hindi outside this site, see the Windows setup guide.
Two ordering rules that catch everyone
On the legacy typewriter layouts — Remington GAIL, Kruti Dev and DevLys — you type what you see, not what you say. Two consequences trip up nearly every candidate:
- The vowel sign ि sits to the left of its consonant, so it is typed before the consonant. To get कि you press the ि key first, then क.
- The half-र form र् sits above the cluster, so it is typed after the letters it attaches to.
InScript does not behave this way — it follows spoken order. This is the single most common reason Hindi practice on a generic tool fails to transfer to the exam, and it is check 6 on our exam-pattern checklist.
Key mappings by layout
These tables are generated directly from the same mapping tables the typing engine uses, so a chart here cannot disagree with what the practice tests accept.

Hindi DevLys 010
118 mapped keys — identical to Hindi Kruti Dev 010. These are two different fonts that share one keyboard encoding, so every key below behaves the same in both. Use the Hindi Kruti Dev 010 tables above.
Frequently asked questions
Which Hindi layout does my exam use?
It is named in the recruitment notice for your post. Check it before you start practising — the layouts have different key positions and switching late is expensive.
Why is the vowel sign typed before the consonant?
Legacy typewriter layouts are typed in visual order. ि appears to the left, so it is typed first; र् appears above and is typed after its cluster. InScript follows spoken order instead.
Do I need to install a Hindi keyboard to practise here?
No. Keystrokes are mapped in the browser. You do need a real setup to type Hindi elsewhere — see the Windows guide.
What is the difference between Kruti Dev 010 and DevLys 010?
Different fonts, one keyboard encoding. Every key produces the same character in both, so the tables above are identical and practice transfers exactly. Only the glyph design differs. Use whichever your notice names.
Is there a Windows app for this typing test?
Yes — the same practice engine also runs as a native Windows app on the Microsoft Store. It works offline, locks editing keys at the OS level, and bundles all three Hindi layouts. One paid key unlocks the full test bank on both the website and the app.
Sarkari Exam Typing is an independent private practice tool and is not affiliated with any government body or recruiting authority. These charts document the mappings implemented in this site's typing engine; confirm the layout required for your post against its current official notice.
